The Boschkerk forms the south wing of Klooster Ter Apel, the late-Gothic monastery founded by the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross. Building began after the foundation in 1465; a fire struck the early church works in 1472 and the church was rededicated in 1473.
Inside, an elaborate early-sixteenth-century rood screen divides the former lay church from the canons’ choir, preserving the spatial organization of the medieval monastery.
The Reformation reached Westerwolde in 1593. The monastic community ended, but the church continued in Protestant use, giving this part of the complex a religious function that outlived the monastery itself.
